It’s worth pointing out that there are no differences in performance or power between the PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition. There are obvious aesthetic differences between the two devices, as the PS5 Digital Edition has a slightly smaller profile owing to the absence of a disc drive.
Every game is 100% installed though, whether it’s a digital game or disc game so they both take up the same space. The only difference is the fact that you need to keep in the disc for a disc game as the console uses the disc as a “license check” to make sure that you actually still own that game.
Many of the best PS5 games require between 40-60 GB of storage. Even if you mix in some PS4 games and smaller indies, you can realistically store 10-15 games on the drive at a time. After that, you’ll need to delete games and redownload them if you ever want to play them again.
It simply does not matter if you buy disk games or download them. The disk will also install and take the same amount of space that a downloaded game would. A disk is simply available so that you don’t have to wait and download the game – basically its been downloaded onto the disk and you just need to install.
From my experience, the digital copy does take up considerably more space on your hard drive than a physical copy.
Disc is faster. Disconnect from the internet, install the disc, then connect and start it. You’ll be prompted to download any patches. Digital requires you to download the entire game before you install patches so it takes longer.
Spec-wise, both PS5 consoles feature the same AMD Zen 2-based CPU, the same 16GB GDDR6 / 256-bit memory, and the same 825GB SSD. The way Sony has designed and integrated the PS5’s storage makes it so fast (more than twice as fast as that of the Series X) that it boosts overall console performance.
Digital games are better than physical games in almost every way. The discounts are bigger, you can use them to gameshare, you never need to worry about stock levels, they’re forever linked to your account, it’s easy to switch between games, and they have less environmental impact.
All physical (disc) games are fully installed to the hard drive anyway, so they take up roughly the same amount of space as digital versions.
Do digital games run better than disc based games, vice versa, or is there not really a difference in performance and loading times? No difference at all. The disc once installed is only used for a license check.
The PS5’s storage can be expanded in three distinct ways: by installing a Sony-recommended NVMe SSD (Sony’s official PS5 teardown video shows exactly where an extra drive will fit), or by adding an external HDD or SSD attached via USB.
The first and most significant difference between the Standard PS5 and the PS5 Digital Edition is that the former comes with a disc drive and the latter does not. The digital version of the PS5 is 100% digital, meaning it won’t be compatible at all with games that come on a disc.
Remember, most importantly, any PS5 games moved to an external hard drive cannot be played and can only remain there for storage purposes. When you want to play them again, you’ll need to transfer them back to internal storage and apply any new updates.
As mentioned earlier, a new PS5 system update now lets you transfer PS5 games as well as PS4 games to an applicable external USB or USB-C hard drive or portable SSD. Don’t forget though, while you can now store PS5 games externally, you can only play them once you move them back onto your PS5’s internal SSD.
Select the upgrade offer on the game hub and review the upgrade offer. Select Download (or purchase with the discount price) to download/purchase content. After the download is complete, you can play the PS5 digital game by inserting the PS5 game disc. You will need to keep the disc inserted each time to play the game.
You can play PS4 games directly from the external SSD, but not PS5 games. You can only store them there to free up space on the internal drive. But now a new version of the PS5 OS allows you to use the previously hibernating extra M. 2 hard drive slot inside the PS5.
Connect your USB drive to a USB port on the back of your PS5 console. Go to Settings > Storage. Select USB Extended Storage > Format as USB Extended Storage. When there are multiple USB drives connected, you can change which USB drive you format by choosing Select Another USB Drive.
That’s because the PlayStation 5 doesn’t support Bluetooth audio. If you want to use a Bluetooth headset anyway, you need a Bluetooth USB adapter. This allows you to still use your gaming headset via Bluetooth. You purchase a Bluetooth USB adapter separately and connect it to a USB port on the PS5.
PS5 Overheating Fix
An overheating PlayStation 5 console can be more or less fixed with a quick cleanup, as per ITechPost. The main reason why this fix tends to be effective is because it clears out any dust or grime buildup on the console’s ventilation holes, which allows it to pull cool air in and push hot air out.
Put your PS5 at least four inches from any wall surfaces, and don’t keep it in a cabinet or enclosed space. Lightly vacuum the vents to stop dust or debris from blocking airflow. Keep your system off carpets, rugs, or mats. Don’t cover your PS5, especially any of the vents.
